How does performance analysis in football link to the coaching process?
Some coaches still object to the need of performance analysis based on the fact that the coaching process (left) has always relied on the coach being an expert in obtaining and analysing data from the naked eye and their own reflection. However although coaches should of course have a keen eye and the ability to evaluate themselves as previously mentioned, there are some severe human limitations within these processes. Some of these limitations include player bias, emotion and previous experiences (Hughes and Bartlett, 2008 as cited in Bartlett and Bussey 2008). It could be argued that a particularly telling statistic which underlines the need for performance analysis would be that coaches can only recollect 59.2% of a 45 minute passage of play whereas with video analysis of course you do not miss a kick (Laird and Waters, 2008 as cited in Haines, 2013).
These statistics clearly underline the importance of performance analysis withing football. The table below indicates what the coaching process may be when incorporating PA. Tactically is another area where performance analysis has been huge. As previously mentioned I have only used 20 minutes of PA to date and within that I found out that where I thought the team was struggling there were signs of progress and where I thought the team was strong there was a lot of room for improvement. this has since led to the development of specific sessions on these findings and a new found approach when considering playing positions.
